WG1 - Literature and Market Review

WG1 will focus on reviewing literature as well as market/industry related databases to collect information on technologies, methods, tools, protocols, industrial and market segments that are involved, are interested, and may contribute to the generation of new knowledge in the area of indoor air cleaning.

Key objective: To identify the existing technologies and commercially available solutions for indoor air cleaning.

WG2 - Air cleaning solutions for particulate contaminants

Starting from the identified indoor air cleaning technologies in WG1, the WG2 will focus on those for particulate contaminants and analyse each of them, considering different target indoor microenvironments, and the emission of by-products that may pose risks to human health and/or to the environment. WG2 will also propose possible future technological breakthroughs. WG2 will work in parallel and in strict collaboration with WG3 and WG4. Ultrafine, fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM10-PM2.5) particles will be considered.

Key objective: To critically analyse the existing technologies for the removal of particulate contaminants in the indoor air towards the development of standardised methodologies.

WG3 - Air cleaning solutions for gaseous contaminants

Starting from the identified indoor air cleaning technologies in WG1, the WG3 will focus on those for gaseous contaminants and analyse each of them, considering different target indoor microenvironments, and the emission of by-products that may pose risks to human health and/or to the environment. WG3 will also propose possible future technological breakthroughs. WG3 will work in parallel and in strict collaboration with WG2 and WG4.

Key objective: To critically analyse the existing technologies for the removal of inorganic gases and VOCs in the indoor air towards the development of standardised methodologies.

WG4 - Air cleaning solutions for biological contaminants

Starting from the identified indoor air cleaning technologies in WG1, the WG4 will focus on those for biological contaminants (like bacteria, fungi, viruses, pollen, mould, spores) and analyse each of them considering different target indoor microenvironments, and the emission of by-products that may pose risks to human health and/or to the environment. WG4 will also propose possible future technological breakthroughs. WG4 will work in parallel and in strict collaboration with WG2 and WG3.

Key objective: To critically analyse the existing technologies for the removal of biological contaminants in the indoor air towards the development of standardised methodologies.

WG5 - Technological integration of solutions

WG5 will focus on finding ways to integrate the solutions analysed in the previous WGs. The technological integration will be considered in 3 different domains: the ability to integrate cleaning of multiple pollutants, integration with real-time air quality monitoring systems, integration with automatic management systems (smart readiness).

Key objective: To identify opportunities for technological integration of air cleaning solutions.

WG6 - Roadmap for Decision Support

Using the knowledge gathered in all the previous WGs, WG6 will provide the final outputs of Net4CleanAir by developing different recommendations targeted for three major types of stakeholders: researchers/innovators wishing to develop decision-support systems (based on integrated smart solutions for IAQ management with low-cost real-time monitoring) and indoor air cleaning technologies targeting multiple pollutants; policymakers; and end-users of indoor air cleaning technologies/systems. WG6 is expected to provide researchers/innovators with a roadmap to further develop and implement a Decision-Support System for indoor air cleaning, based on existing technologies and their potential integration. Moreover, WG6 will provide policymakers with the necessary recommendations for regulation and legislation on a topic that has yet to be regulated in Europe. By developing targeted dissemination materials, WG6 will also directly serve citizens in general as end-users of indoor air cleaning technologies. End-users may also benefit indirectly in a long-term perspective, if the roadmap is further implemented as a tool after the end of the Action.

Key objective: To contribute with recommendations for the future development of an integrated Decision Support System for indoor air cleaning and with recommendations to support the decision of policymakers and enhance end-users’ literacy in its use.
